On one of the highest peaks of Kampala city, sits Makerere University, covered by a green wave of old trees that stretch out towards the sky in an array that hides and hosts the homes of the Marabou stock bird species. In their numbers, they rule the many green spaces at the Campus, making a menace of the clean paths and rooftops with their whitish release, that is considered by students as an omen of success when it ‘lands’ on your head.
I took time off and found out how these birds survive at the peril of a human infested environment.
